Welcome to the Black Democratic Legislative Caucus of Colorado website. Our members proudly serve in the Colorado General Assembly. We work together to pass legislation, promote policies, and advocate for communities of color across the state. Our primary goal is the advancement of equality in the areas education, economic development, judicial reform, health care, and voting rights. In collaboration with community organizations, activists, and residents, we work to ensure that our community’s interests are taken in to account in all business before the legislature.
We stand on the shoulder of giants. Since Colorado’s founding, over 35 African Americans have served in either the State House of Representatives or the State Senate, dating back to 1897. We were the first state in the nation to have both an African American Speaker of the House and President of the Senate at the same time. And in 2017, for the first time in Colorado History, the BDLC had 2 members begin serving in the Senate together and 6 members serving together in the House.
As the Chair of this remarkable group of legislators, it is an honor to continue leading this great legacy forward. My colleagues and I are committed to working together in order to achieve great things on behalf of our community. We understand that we not only serve our districts, but must provide a voice for African Americans and communities of color across all of Colorado. You’re interest, involvement, and input are greatly needed and appreciated.
Sincerely,
Leslie Herod
State Representative – House District 8
