Black Caucus Celebrates Rep. Williams’ Election as House Caucus Chair

November 20, 2014 – Denver, CO

The Black Democratic Legislative Caucus celebrates the recent leadership election of State Representative Angela Williams as the new House Majority Caucus Chair. The Caucus Chair is responsible for managing the agenda for House Democrat Caucus meetings and works with legislators on policy integration with Caucus priorities.

“It is a great honor to be elected by my peers into this position,” Williams said following the election. “I’m excited to bring innovative ideas and solutions to our caucus with the aim of moving Colorado forward in the upcoming session.”

In light of her new position and the duties associated with it, the BDLC elected State Representative Jovan Melton to replace her as their new Chair, and State Representative John Buckner as their new Vice Chair. Rep. Melton served as the Vice-Chair of the BDLC in the previous term, and Buckner was instrumental in advising the BDLC on education issues.

The BDLC lost a member of it’s ranks this past election with the unsuccessful re-election efforts of State Representative Tony Exum.

“While I’m looking forward to leading our Caucus in the next term, I share the sentiment of our members as we are saddened that our friend and colleague, Representative Exum, will not be returning,” Melton said. “His expertise in public safety from his years of work with the Colorado Springs Fire Department is irreplaceable, however we will all continue to reach out to him for advice and guidance.”

The returning 4 members of the BDLC now constitutes the second largest number of African Americans serving in the history of the Colorado General Assembly. they will be sworn in on January 7, 2015 when the House of Representatives convenes.
